Why are you changing your name?

We started with a very literal name describing what our service did. Share a link and appear together. Today though we're more than just video meetings, and what's coming next is even better. So we wanted a new name to represent all that goodness. And there was some trademark issues over the old name. And we would much rather spend out time building an awesome product for you than doing legal paperwork. 

Since we started we’ve made it our mission to make collaborating from anywhere as simple as possible. We’ve come a long way since then and last year more than 10 million unique users around the world used us to have 58 million video meetings! As a result we have users in almost every country and territory across the globe, and we think that’s pretty amazing. Our team has also grown to include 23 people across 12 different locations. So much of what we do is driven by our own experience to knock down these borders and bring our own team together.

In the beginning, our name represented what our product did. Simply share a link and you can appear in your room together. As the years have progressed, you’ve shown us how work can be multifaceted and the unique challenges video meetings can help overcome. From standup meetings to 1:1 interviews, or simply bringing loved ones together across distances; you’re constantly inspiring us and teaching us the true meaning of the Future of Work. 

This spring we were planning a complete brand overhaul and to update our visual profile. However in April a long-standing trademark dispute did not end in our favor. We’ll do a follow-up post about the intricacies of trademark law, but essentially the word ‘appear’ posed some challenges. When a word is descriptive of the activity you want to trademark it for, the trademark is not allowed to avoid blocking normal use of the word. We believed the word ‘appear’ was descriptive for the category ‘video conferencing’. Long story short, after two rounds in court were we won the first and lost the second one, we then saw no other option but to find a new name. Read more in this blog post.

What is happening to my account and rooms?

We will automatically be transitioning all rooms and accounts to Whereby accounts. Your room names will stay the same, but now they will be accessible at a whereby.com address (https://whereby.com/roomname). All of your account details will stay the same, and you can continue to log in using the same email address on whereby.com

UPDATE as of December 2nd: The appear.in domain is no longer available, and appear.in links will no redirect to whereby.com. Make sure to update your bookmarks and shared links! 

When did this change happen?

As of July 25, 2019, all Norwegian accounts will be redirected to Whereby.com.

For the rest of the world, redirects was set up from appear.in to whereby.com as of September 3, 2019. 

Is anything else changing that I should know about?

On December 2nd, we launched a major upgrade of the in-room meeting experience and also rolled out the new Whereby brand identity. Read more about the new features and improvements. 


I'm experiencing problems after moving to Whereby

While we've changed our name to Whereby, none of the technical aspects of the software has changed but there could be other factors such as cam/mic permissions or security provisions that can cause problems in your Whereby room. For further instructions, please refer to the sub-section that relates to your issue below: 

If you cannot see yourself or you're unable to turn on your cam & mic:

Since whereby.com is a different top level domain than appear.in, it's likely that you'll need to re-allow cam & mic permissions the first time you join a meeting on whereby.com.  If you're still having problems after re-allowing, we have a great article in our Support Center that walks through checking and troubleshooting your mic and cam permissions here, My Cam/Mic isn't working

If you are not able to connect or cannot hear or see others in your room: 

Typically when these types of issues arise, they can relate to a poor network connection or other security provisions such as Firewalls, VPNs or Ad Blockers. Below is a list of the most common causes of any network connection related issue and their respective solutions!

  • Firewall: To use Whereby behind your firewall, a network administrator will need to adjust the settings on the firewall. For this to work, port 443 will need to be open to all TCP and UDP traffic. [Source]
  • VPN/ Proxy: Whitelist our domain whereby.com or disable the VPN/Proxy. [Source]
  • Network Content Filter: Disable
  • Anti-virus browser plug-ins: Disable
  • Ad blocker/tracker blockers: Disable
